Church of England Messenger, May 19th 1916, page 237…Farewell to the Rev. Charles E. Perry……About thirty of the clergy and laity of the diocese met in the room of the Church of England’s Men’s Society at the Cathedral Buildings on Thursday, May 4th, to say good-bye to the Rev. C. E. Perry, M. A., and Mrs. Perry – Mr. Perry having resigned the cure of St. John’s, Camberwell, and accepted the charge of the parish of St. Michael’s, Christchurch, New Zealand. The Archbishop presided…

His Grace the Archbishop said that the Rev. Mr. Perry’s departure from the diocese, after twenty years association was due to a spontaneous and unexpected offer of an important parish in New Zealand, and not of any misunderstanding with his parishioners. On receiving the offer, he had consulted him (the Archbishop), and had acted on the advice then given to accept it…..

Presentations were made to the Rev. C. Perry by the Dean of Melbourne of a valuable robe case and to Mrs [Frances] Perry by the Archbishop of two handsomely bound volumes of Browning and Bridge’s poems in recognition of her own poetic work and of her deep study of Browning…

Mr. Perry in replying, expressed his gratitude to the Archbishop for presiding – and to the clergy for the kindness shown to him throughout his ministry. He had served in more parishes than any other priest with a variety of vicars. He had had a strenuous career – had given some time to journalism and had a vision of what the Church ought to be, and did his best to realise his vision. He spent 45 happy years in Melbourne.

On the previous Wednesday evening a large number of friends of Mr. Perry attended at St. John’s vicarage and presented him with a wallet well filled with bank notes as a token of their approval of his work in the parish. In making the presentation, Mr. E. C. Rigby specially referred to the improvements that had been made during Mr. Perry’s tenure in the Church and school buildings.

Mr. Perry and his family left by the Sydney express on route to New Zealand.

1. From Charles Perry to the editor….St. John’s, Camberwell, and found the Ornaments Rubric of the Prayer Book only partly obeyed. These were altar, font and pulpit of the church. They had been put in without a faculty, without any permission formally given and on the authority of the Ornaments Rubric alone. I put a pair of candles on the altar in the same way…the Ornaments Rubric is for the whole Church of England and it is unconditional in its terms…..May 1st

2. F. Eustace adds a comment…It will be of interest to quote the 56th clause of the Trustees and Vestries Act, which deals with the question of additions to or alterations of church furniture:-…..Rev. C. E. Perry….made the following declaration… I will duly conform to all Acts and Regulations of the Synod of the Diocese of Melbourne…..
