O. - In reply... the Crown grants of St John's Church Parsonage and School lands in Elizabeth, LaTrobe and a'Beckett Streets specify that these lands are set apart in defined areas for the erection, maintenance, and repair of a Church minister's dwelling and school- house, and for no other purpose... the scheme of the Trustees can only be given affect by bringing the land under the Act of Parliament No 391 known as "The State Aid Abolition Act ".... - Bourke St Property... was purchased by Bishop Perry in the Year 1849 for the sum of 172.2.0 pounds and a school house was erected thereon shortly after at a cost of 482 pounds. The cost of the land and buildings was paid for from funds furnished partly by Societies in England and partly by private individuals... Subsequently ... the whole property was let on building lease which has long since expired and it is now let for 736 pounds per annum which will expire on July 1 1891. Bishop Perry acquired the property for educational purposes in connection with the Church of England. Accordingly.... held it for the benefit of Church of England Schools and Colleges ....Melbourne.. The property is consequently held on trust and the annual income derived from it ... used for some years to help the Geelong Grammar School and sundry parochial schools, was devoted wholly to the support of Trinity College until the Bishop in Council should otherwise determine. - To The Reverend J. H. Stahle - I attended the Aboriginal Board meeting yesterday and helped to get an extra allowance of sugar for the aborigines engaged in fencing. I hope this will encourage them and you. The question about the ? was not settled. There was more than one difficulty about it. - Council of the Diocese ... meeting to be held at the Diocesan Registry on Wednesday the 9th May at 3.30 p.m. Business. To consider recommendation of Council of Girl's High School. That the East Melbourne site be sold and that the proceeds of sale be applied to the purchase of another site and the erection thereon of a school building or to the purchase of an existing building. In the event of the Council of the Diocese advising affirmatively the Bishop intends to call a special meeting of the Church Assembly to decide the question. May 5 1888. Page 120.

- To The Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of Ballarat - I regret to inform your Lordship that the efforts we have made to effect an amalgamation of the Superannuation Funds of the Dioceses of Melbourne and Ballarat have resulted unsuccessfully, and there is no prospect, for the present at leas, of accomplishing the union of the funds... The Bishop in Council .. having been advised that the amalgamation could not be legally effected without the concurrence of every subscriber to the Funds, the consent of the Melbourne subscribers was sought... with the result that of the 80 subscribers, only 53 signified they would consent .. From a valuation of the property .. the price ( 11000 pounds ) you ask is largely in excess of its market value; consequently the Bishop in Council is not prepared to proceed further with the negotiation if you insist on these terms..... But, in the event of your being willing to agree to the amount of the purchase money being settled by arbitration, his Lordship will call a special meeting of the Church Assembly early in June... Macartney, which he has placed in my hands, knowing how deeply I am interested in the aborigines of Australia, I beg to inform you that there is only a remnant of the aboriginal race left in Victoria. The government of the Colony makes liberal provision for their temporal welfare and supply them with homes, clothing and rations; and the Church of England, Presbyterian and Moravian Churches care for their spiritual well being. I take the opportunity of asking if you have amongst your father's old papers the Crown Grants of the land at Geelong in which Christchurch is built. They were delivered to him on ? We have the affidavits connected with the licences Mr McJennett granted in 186, but they do not pertain to the marriage in question. He does not seem to have made any returns in 1859. June 23 1888. Mr Gilsenan, the new teacher at Condoh, through some misunderstanding, was unable to obtain from the Education Department the books needed for carrying on his work, and, in despair, he procured and paid for these himself. - To A. E. Stogdon Esquire Llanfairfechan? North Wales Great Britain .. In reply.. St Paul's Cathedral in this city is now in the course of construction and that the building is not likely to be completed before the early months of 1889. Boys are being prepared for the choir, but the engagement of adult members will not be made for some considerable time. The organist will be also choirmaster and have the instruction of the choir. The organ is being built by Willis and will we hope be a first class though not very large instrument. It is to cost when erected here 3000 pounds. - To The Reverend B. Rodda ( Benjamin ).. in order to the appointment of Parochial nominators it is necessary (1) that the Church be consecrated (2) that the Parish be consecrated. When the Church is consecrated a Vestry can be elected; and when a parish has been constituted the Vestry can elect nominators.... The advantages derived from consecrating a church and consolidating a parish are that the management of the affairs of the Church in the locality come under a fully constituted managing body in accordance of the Church, and the people obtain a voice in the patronage of the living through their representatives on the Board of Nominators... - To Dr Leeper Trinity College - At a meeting of the Council of the Diocese .. it was advised that 6000 pounds of the Hastie bequest be granted to Trinity College on condition that 300 pounds a year be deducted from the annual Grants to the College from Church Funds and that the debts of the College to Bishop Perry and the said Funds be paid. The proposed apportionment will be mentioned in the Report of the proceedings of the Bishop in Council submitted to the Church Assembly, and if not objected to by the Assembly, will be carried into effect by the Bishop. - To Mr Leeper ....I sent you an intimation of the result of your application in the matter of the Hastie bequest... It is intended that the 300 pounds shall be deducted from the appropriations out of the consolidated Fund which appear before the Church Assembly every year... The balance of the 6000 pounds, after paying off Bishop Perry and the amount due to the Church Fund will be at the disposal of the College Council. The result of the appeal is no doubt a disappointment to you, but there was danger of absolute refusal of any grant at all... For the present the financial position of the College is not much improved, but it may be better in three years when leases of the Bourke Street property will run out and we shall be able to renew at higher rentals. - To The Venerable Archdeacon Herring - I do nont see how I could properly move the resolution about the Registry which the Council of the Archdeaconry of Beechworth think is desirable, but I would make no opposition to it... A rate on the parishes is not found to work without friction in the Diocese of Sydney, where it has been adopted... The Bishop in Council has no intention to bring in a Bill on the subject. .The Committee appointed to consider and report on the proposed amalgamation of the CW&O? Fund with the Superannuation Fund have recommended that the amalgamation take place under certain conditions and the Bishop has asked the Law committee to advise whether the step is practicable. .. two lawyers on the Council gave it as their opinion that the amalgamation could not be effected unless the Superannuation Funds of Ballarat and Melbourne were first united... Wilson C of E Grammar School St Kilda Road - At recent meetings of the Bishop in Council the apportionment to Church objects of the part of the Hastie bequest.. has been a subject of consideration  and your appeal... has received attention.. The Bishop in Council would have been glad to apportion some of the money to the object you have in view if other objects of more pressing need had not presented themselves. To receive report from the Offices and Leasing Committees involving the consideration of the question whether the Church Funds shall be used in erecting buildings upon a portion of land to be leased from the Trustees of the Cathedral.. - To The Reverend R. H. Potter ( Richard Harry ) Yarrawonga - The difference between a parish and parochial district is defined in the Act of the Church Assembly No. 3. 1878... You will see in the same Act that a clergyman instituted to a parish becomes an "Incumbent". There are no "Incumbents", strictly speaking of Parochial Districts... a parish in which there is a consecrated church has a right to nominate members of the Board of Patronage - a parochial district has not. - To Reverend Canon Watson - At the meeting of the Bishop in Council yesterday afternoon, the following Resolution, passed last week by the Law Committee was adopted "That inasmuch as the Clergy of the Diocese of Ballarat are interacted in the Clergy Widow and Orphans Fund and not the Clergy Superannuation Fund, the two Funds are for two different purposes and cannot be amalgamated unless each person interested would agree to the dissolution of each Fund and the formation of a new Fund...". I led you to understand that the Cathedral might not be opened before the middle of next year,,, but the Chapter wishes you to arrange as to arrive in Melbourne abut the end of March next.
