- To The Honorable W. E. Stanbridge Daylesford - I enclose with best thanks a receipt for you remittance of 200 pounds for the Cathedral Fund.. preparation for the reception of our new Bishop have occasioned delay in the making of this acknowledgement. April 12 1887.

- To The Reverend W. L. Blamires South Yarra - We were under the impression that the Reverend W. P. Wells was President of the Wesleyan Conference and forwarded to him a ticket for the luncheon to be given to Bishop Goe on the 14th . He has written to say that you are now the President, and that he has forwarded the ticket to you... we shall be very glad if you will favour us with your company on the occasion. April 12 1887. - To Mrs Neville - When country clergy were informed that they could have each two tickets to the installation... it was determined that a procession take place, and it became necessary to order that the tickets issued to clergymen be not transferred... April 19 1887. Page 10.

- To Right Reverend Lord Bishop of Ballarat - It is necessary that our new Bishop be registered under the ... Act as the Head our Denomination in the Diocese of Melbourne in his character of successor to Bishop Moorhouse and for this purpose he must make an application to the Registrar General similar in its terms to the application made by you and Bishop Moorhouse respectively in March 1879. Each of the then applications described the boundary line of the two Dioceses... it is now absolutely necessary that a correct description thereof accompany our Bishop's Registration ... - To Miss Austin Skelmorlie Dandenong Road Caulfield - I am directed by the Council of the Diocese of Melbourne before whom the report of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Bishop of Melbourne Fund was placed at the last meeting to express to the managing body the Council's high appreciation of the exertions made by the auxiliary on behalf of their fund and their hearty thanks ... and I shall be glad if you will as secretary of the auxiliary communicate the contents of this to the committee at its next meeting. - Council of the Diocese - A meeting of Council is intended to be held at the Diocesan Registry on Wednesday the 27th April immediately after the meeting of the Cathedral Erection Board... To consider 1. Postponed applications for leave to deal with Church lands at Brighton, East Melbourne, and Geelong. 2. Postponed applications for Grants from the Bishop of Melbourne's Funds. 3. Turner Esquire St Paul's Vestry Flinders Street - At a meeting of the Committee appointed to make arrangements for the reception of the Bishop of Melbourne I was directed to convey to you and to the members of the choir of St Pauls the committees thankful acknowledgements of the valuable services kindly rendered by you and them at the Public Meeting at the Town Hall on Friday last. - To the Venerable Archdeacon MacCullagh .. I have made a rough sketch of what the Bishop may be expected to do this year. Will you kindly return it and say whether it will satisfy the requirements of Sandhurst and Beechworth.. The Bishop is desirous of getting his plans settled as soon as possible .. If you find any improbabilities in my proposed arrangements, please remember hat I have very little knowledge of the methods of locomotion in your parts... April 23 1887. Page 35.

- To The Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of Ballarat - I thank you very much for your letter and am obliged to you for your suggested alteration in the description of the new boundary.. I am preparing for your signature a letter to the Registrar General which I purpose sending on with one of similar purpose from our new Bishop... April 25 1887. Page 41.

- To The Reverend A. Crawford ( Archibald ) - The Bishop will be glad to see you when he gets into his own house. At present he is a visitor at Government House, his furniture being "at sea". April 27 1887. Page 50.

- The Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of Ballarat - In pursuance of the provisions of an Act of our Church Assembly which governed the administration of our Church Funds, the Bishop in Council determined that the salary of the Administrator of the Act be 500 pounds a year, and thereupon the Bishop appointed Archdeacon Stretch to be the Administrator (copy enclosed). The Bishop also gave the Archdeacon a general officiating licences. he sum mentioned does not include travelling expenses... April 29 1887. Page 62.

- To The Reverend C. T. Perks ( Charles Thomas ) - The Bishop directs me to ask if you do not think it desirable to call the Cathedral Board together again on an early? day to consider what steps shall be taken to raise the required 20000 pounds. April 29 1887. Page 66.

- To The Reverend C. T. Perks - The Bishop can attend a meeting of the Cathedral Erection Board on Monday 9th May at 3.30 p.m. You will, I presume send out the notices in due course. May 2 1887. Page 76.

- To The Reverend J. H. Stable - I have thought it well to substitute for your letter to Captain Page the one of which I enclose a copy. You will see that I have altered the concluding paragraph. It is undesirable to raise again the questions whether you have or have not the confidence of the Board. As regards this particular case all you want is evidence of authority to act... May 3 1887. Page 83.

- To Mr Bennett - your letter containing the resignation of your office of advocate of the Diocese reached the Registry just before the arrival of our new Bishop. It was sent to me by your partners accompanied by a cablegram from you containing a request that the resignation be withheld - your letter and cablegram were placed before the Bishop who regards the cablegram as nullifying the resignation and does not accept. He thinks however that it would be well for you to repeat resignation if you do not intend to return soon to the Colony... I feel sure that if you had been in the Colony when my son was raised to the judicial bench you would have congratulated me warmly upon his appointment and I know you will be glad he performs the important duties of his high office much to the salutation of the members of both council of our profession and of the public generally... Sir W. Stawell acted very wisely in retiring when he found as he did that he could not in the weak state of his health bear the strain upon the brain to which it continuously subjected him. For some weeks after his retirement he seemed a good deal ? mentally but he has lately recovered a good deal of his mental activity and seems .. Mr Clarke told me the other day that Lady Lock is "quite" charmed with Mr Goe and I doubt not Lady Clarke will be so also.. Sir William has just finished a splendid Town Mansion as the ground which belonged to his father at the corner of Clarendon Street and the Wellington Parade. Just one week after the arrival of the Bishop a legacy was bequeathed to our church by Leslie? of Brighton by which the Bishop of Melbourne fund and the Cathedral Fund will be benefited ... nearly 20,000 pounds. I am now very near to entering upon my 80th year (a'Beckett). Morris does almost all the work of the Diocese.... My son Ted is painting for the Supreme court a full length portrait of him as a companion to the portrait he painted of Sir Robert Molesworth... Stawells portrait which is nearly finished ... Everyone is impressed by our new Bishop and I feel confident he is the right man in the right place. Bishop Moorhouse was an orator quite above any orator I ever heard but he was rather deficient in some qualities ... and which I can see that our new Bishop processes in a very high degree... He and Mrs Goe are at present the guest of the Governor and they will remain at Government House until they can get Bishopscourt made fit for their occupation of it which will be very shortly as the ship containing all their furniture has been telegraphed as being off the Otway ... May 3 1887... Pages 85 - 87. ( Note pages 86 and 87 are the same so last part of the letter is missing).

- To Thomas Heny M.P. - Your application for a loan of 400 pounds in aid of a church at Pakenham has been favourably entertained and the money will be lent on the following conditions 1. That the site of the building be duly vested in the Church of England Trusts Corporation for the Diocese of Melbourne. 2. That Messrs. John Stanton J.C. Hodgson and yourself give joint and several promissory notes for the repayment of the money within 5 years by equal half yearly instalments with six percent per annum interest. May 4 1887. Page 92.

- Circular Customs House Charges on Bishop Testimonial - The gentlemen appointed to take steps with reference to Custom House charges on the Bishop's testimonial are requested to meet at the Registry on Friday the 6th May at 4.15 p.m. To consider Mr Rosiato's report. May 4 1887. Page 97.

- Cathedral Chapter The Bishop invites the attendance of members at a meeting of the Cathedral Chapter to be held at the Diocesan Registry on Friday the 13th May at 3 p.m. To consider the need of organising a Choir for the Cathedral. May 6 1887. page 101.

- To The Venerable Archdeacon MacCullagh Sandhurst - The Bishop will endeavour to carry out the programme you have arranged and will not give way to ... clergymen who "ask for more". Mrs Goe will accompany the Bishop on his first visit to Sandhurst.. but she cannot say yet whether she will travel with him subsequently... The Bishop says he will always be glad of your company when you are disposed to accompany him, but he does not wish you to consider it a duty to come... on the occasion of his first visitation he will not object to hold confirmation and attend a public meeting on the same day.... May 6 1887. Page 102.

- To The Venerable Archdeacon Stretch ( Rural Dean of South Melbourne ) Similar letters sent to Reverends H. A. Langley, C. J. Godly, J. H. Gregory, W. Fellows, Very Revd. the Dean of Melbourne ( Archdeacon of Melbourne ), Venerable Archdeacon Stretch ( Rural Dean of S. Melbourne ) - The Bishop will be glad if you will confer with him and others of the Clergy... with reference to the arrangements that should be made to supply the ministrations of the Church to he rapidly increasing population in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne and to consider the desirableness of modifying existing parochial arrangements in connection therewith. - To H. Veal .. Hotham Hill... inform you that the guardians of St Georges Royal Park have no right whatever to sell? any portion of the church ground. the only persons who can do so are Trustees and the powers given to them of dealing with property are subject in their exercise to the limitations and conditions set forth in the Declaration of Trusts affecting the property which are as follows... May 9 1887. Page 108.

- To The Reverend J. H. Stahle ... Dr Morrison, having being appointed Vice President of the Aboriginal Board, and having heard a good deal about you and your work; having heard also of the differences between you and Captain Page, he wishes to see you and the station... involve a little delay, that can hardly be helped, seeing Dr. M. has his own private business to attend to... Funds raised in the way you propose might start a mission, but they could not be relied on for yearly support... May 9 1887. Page 110 - 111.

- Cathedral Chapter - the Bishop invites the attendance of members at a meeting of the Cathedral Chapter to be held at the Diocesan Registry on Wednesday the 18th May at 4.15 p.m. 1. To consider the need of organising a Choir for the Cathedral 2. To make arrangements for services on the occasion of the Queen's jubilee. May 13 1887. Page 124.

- To The Reverend J. Swindells Stratford ( James ) ... the Bishop directs me to say that his first visit to Gippsland will only be a flying one for the purpose of visiting the principal centres of population, and he fears that he will be unable to go to Stratford. He must postpone anything like an exhaustive visitation till the early part of next year, then he hopes to visit the district under your charge. At the same time, if Canon Watson can put you down for a time than can conveniently be given to you, his Lordship will be glad to go to Stratford in September. May 13 1887. Page 127.

- To The Reverend A. W. Cresswell ( Arthur William ) - I enclose you a communication I have received from a person named Mybrea and on the other side you will find a copy of my reply therein....

- To R. A. Mybrea Harts Parade.... It is no part of my duty as Registrar of the Diocese to make complaints to he Bishop of any of the Clergy on behalf of persons who feel they have matters of complaint against them and I must decline complying with your request to me to do so on your behalf against the Revd. W. Cresswell... I may say I have known Mr Cresswell for many years and have always heard him spoken of in the most respectful terms... I am sorry to find that he has been made the recipient of a letter from you of so offensive a character as that of which you have sent me a copy. May 16 1887. Page 131. ( Copy ).

- To The Reverend Stahle Condah - I forward for your perusal the accompanying letter I have just received from the Board. Be so good as to return it to me when you have read it. You seem to have been misled by McCarthy. If so, you had better write a letter expressing your regret. I will send it on to the Board. May 17 1887. Page 132.

- To The Reverend H. J. Poole ( Henry John Alexander Riddle ) Rural Dean Wangaratta - The Bishop has been requested to consecrate the Church at Rutherglen, and has named the 26th of the month for the ceremony of consecration. Meantime he will feel obliged by your inspecting the building, and reporting to him whether it is duly furnished with everything needed for the ? performance of Divine service as required by the Act of the Church Assembly no. 1 1878 ( The Patronage Act ). May 19 1887. Page 143.

- To The Reverend E. A. Crawford ( Edward Arthur ) - If you refer to the Patronage Act you will see that the Vestry of a Parish elects the Parochial Nominations who form a portion of the Board of Nomination, and if you look at the Trustees and Vestries Act further that a Church must be consecrated before it can have a Vestry. There is no hardship in the case of Dandenong... I enclose form of petition for consecration. May 25 1887. Page 152.

- To The Reverend T. Moorhouse ( Thomas ) - From the report of the Rural Dean it appears that St Stephens Church Rutherglen is hardly ready for consecration ( the defects are mentioned on the other side.... Furniture etc. needed to be supplied. 1. Pulpit 2. A suitable table for Holy Communion 3. Holy Bible or Book of Common Prayer in good condition. 4. Books for Registration and record and a suitable chest. 5. A security? cover for the Holy Table and suitable chairs.... Some loose bricks - slates need fixing and leakage prevented.... May 26 1887. Page 160.

- To Messrs Langford and Hutchinson - There is a leakage in the roof of the tower at Bishopscourt. Be so good as to have the needful repairs done.... May 28 1887. Page 174.

- To G. H. Kuster Bourke Street - I am informed by our Solicitors ( Messrs Moule and Seddon, Market Street ) that your matter can be arranged by a simple assignment ... May 31 1887. Page 179.

- To The Reverend E S. Radcliff ( Edward Samuel ) - At a conference of members of Committees of our Aboriginal and Chinese Missions held recently. the questions of to a certain extent amalgamating the two Committees and of enlarging the sphere of their operations, was considered, and it was determined to refer the matter to the Interdiocesan for advice.... - To The Reverend J. E. Herring ( John Edward ) Kyneton - In reply to your letter of the 1st the Bishop directs me to say that he and Mrs Goe will gladly avail themselves to your hospitality. They wished to travel by the midday train on Monday. June 4 1887. Page 199.

- To The Reverend W. Fellows ( Walter ) - We are inviting people to another meeting at Bishopscourt about the Cathedral. Would you mind helping us to select the right sort of people to ask to come?... June 6 1887. Page 201.

- To The Reverend Stahle - I have been in doubt about writing to Captain Page respecting the sugar, because I do not quite understand your position, and I am afraid of doing mischief if I write without a clear understanding of the case... The particular point on which I need enlightenment is the basis on which you make out your returns.... June 6 1887. Page 203.

- To W. Croft Hon. Sec. Trustees of St I Land Carlton - I have returned the draft lease of part of St Matthews land to Bartlett approved, and when the lease is sent to me duly completed by the lessee and lesser, I will obtain the Bishop's assent to it.. subject to the condition that 20% of the income be paid into Church Funds and that the disposal of the balance be reserved for subsequent consideration... June 6 1887. Page 213.

- To The Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of Ballarat - Our Bishop has forwarded to me from Castlemaine your Lordship's letter ... I would have the Jubilee service printed as for the two diocese. unfortunately, his Lordship's wishes have reached me after the document has been printed ... Since writing the above, I have ... received your Lordship's letter... In accordance with your wishes I have directed that the copies of the service which were printed for you be forwarded by next train to Ballarat... we could not take the responsibility of ordering so large a number... June 10 1887. Pages 220 -221.

- To The Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of Ballarat - In your Lordships letter... you enquire whether your personal attendance is desirable on the 16th re the Hastie legacy; also whether his Lordship will attend personally, or by Council... I beg to inform your Lordship it has not yet been decided how this Diocese will be represented in the case.. I have with the Bishop's permission, called our Council for the 17th in order that some decision might be come to as to our course of action and Messrs Davis and Campbell, Solicitors in the case .. advise? me that we shall have ample time if we act on that day... June 10 1887. Page 222.

- To The Honorable W. A. Zeal Imperial Chambers Bank Place - I venture to inform you as the representatives of the Trustees of the late W. C. Cornish that the funds available for the erection of the new Cathedral are at a very low ebb and that a further payment on account of the promised contribution .. will be very acceptable... June 14 1887. Page 228.

- To The Reverend C. T. Perks - It being very doubtful whether Messrs George and George can be lawfully required to pay the rates on the hoarding I think it will be desirable to bring the matter under the consideration of the Cathedral Erection Board... June 14 1887. Page 234.

- To Messrs Sandilands and Co.. London - I forward herewith by registered packet the Deeds, seven in number which you sent with your letter on the 16th May for signature by the Bishop of Melbourne. They have been duly executed by his Lordship in the presence of a notary public an myself. Jun 23 1887. Page 243.

- To The Reverend E. S. Radcliff ( Edward Samuel ) - At a meeting of the Council of this Diocese held yesterday Mr F .G. Moule, Solicitor, Market Square Melbourne, was appointed to look after our interests in the matter of the Hastie Bequest. A committee of the Council, consisting of Messrs Henry Henty, John Grice and E. D. Puckle was also appointed to confer with all parties interested with the view of effecting a settlement. June 18 1887. Page 243.

- To The Honorable Sir James MacBain - The Bishop in Council ... have appointed a committee consisting of Messrs John Grice, Henry Henty and E. D. Puckle to confer with representatives of all parties interested in the Hastie bequest. - To W. Cain Esquire - ow that the jubilee engagements are over, I shall be glad to know when it will be convenient to you to convene a meeting .. Bishopscourt to deal with Cathedral business... June 27 1887. Page 256.

- St Mary's Hotham Election of representatives in Church Assembly -Having considered the accompanying letters and also the provisions of our Assemblies Acts No 2, 1878 and No 1 1879 and also copy of the Revd Canon Potter's license to the Chaplaincy of Trinity College, .... by the appointment by the Bishop of Canon Potter as Chaplain of Trinity College this building became "a portion of the Diocese not within the boundaries of any parish which was placed under the charge of a clerk duly licensed to a Parish"... while under such charge a portion of St Mary's Hotham... June 25 1887. Pages 259 - 260.

- To The Lord Bishop of Ballarat Bishopscourt Ballarat - Sir James McBain is arranging conferences tomorrow afternoon re Hastie Bequest. Can you attend or name representative. Mr Moule represents us provisionally. June 30 1887. Page 277.

- To The Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of Ballarat - I have asked Mr Fox, the Hon. Sec. of our Mission to the Aborigines to send on the address to the ? to Lake Tyers in accordance with your Lordship's suggestion. The notice about the Hastie business was certainly very short. Sir James McBain called about the matter only yesterday morning and I telegraphed to you almost immediately after he left the office. Your telegram in reply did not reach me till nearly 5 o’clock. My answer to that was sent without a moment's delay. July 1 1887. Page 283.

- To The Venerable Archdeacon Stretch - In reply to your memorandum ... re. Box Hill and neighbourhood, the Bishop directs me to say that he thinks it will be better, in the circumstances, to revert to the original intention of building a temporary church at Box Hill, with a view to it becoming a school house when a permanent church should be built. Roberts Reedy Creek Station Broadford - The Bishop directs me to enquire whether there resides in your neighbourhood any Chinese from whom it might be possible for you to obtain some elementary instruction in the Chinese language with the view of your subsequently pursuing the study of it so as to qualify yourself for a missionary to the Chinese in this Colony> July 13 1887. - To Edward Latham Esquire Carlton - The Bishop has received from the Hon. Sec. of the Lathamstowe Trust a report and amounts for this year ended March 31 1887. As you are a member of the Board of Management from whether the report emanates you may be ? of the contents... July 14 1887. Page 340.

- To The Reverend E. Crawford ( Edward ) Dandenong - I could not reply to your letter of the 15th about the consecration of your Church before seeing the Bishop on the subject... His Lordship does not remember having heard from you about it. he said you wrote to ask if he had any objection to consecrate the C/E portion of the burial ground at Dandenong and that he had replied he had not, but that you did not mention the Church. He said further that he had not received a petition to consecrate it.. I enclose a form of petition for the consecration of the Church, and another for that of the burial ground burial ground .. ask the Rural Dean to report as to the sufficiency and fitness of the building.. Have you any one who can .. represent the Registrar and the Chancellor on the occasion. The functionary has only to read a few legal documents. July 18 1887. Pages 350 - 351.

- At a meeting of the Inter-Diocesan Committee held at the Diocesan Registry Melbourne on the 12th of July 1887 at 4 p.m. .. The question of the amalgamation of the Superannuation Funds of the Dioceses of Melbourne and Ballarat was considered... the following resolution was carried unanimously... it is very desirable in the interests of the Church of England in Victoria, that the Superannuation Funds of the two dioceses should be amalgamated.... The following resolution, moved by the Bishop of Ballarat and seconded by Canon Handfield was agreed to:- "That the members of the Boards of the two Superannuation Funds be requested to confer as to the practicability and the best method of carrying out the above resolution... ".... The subject of Missions to the Aborigines and Chinese in Victoria, and of Missions to New Guinea and the Melanesian Islands.... "that in the opinion of this Committee, the formation of a joint Board of Missions, for both dioceses is desirable for promoting throughout Victoria the cause of missions to the Heathens. Page 371.

- To Reverend Canon Watson Sale - In reply.. the Bishop recognises the desirableness of a formal induction of every clergyman with his people, and in the few cases in which appointments have been made since his arrival in Victoria, he has requested the Archdeacon or Rural Dean to have a formal service to suit the occasion. - To The Reverend J. H. Stahle - I am very glad you have made up your mind not to write to Captain Page on the subjects to which your recent letters referred... Why should not the aborigines, where they are receiving wages for extra work, purchase with these extra wages the additional sugar and other things beyond their ordinary rations, which they require?  I only half thanked you for the photographs you so kindly sent to me. I shall prize them highly and exhibit them when framed to any schools I address. I mean to ask for special contributions to furnish the tower.
