Ham 45 Swanston Street - In reply to your letter yesterday I beg to inform you that Mrs Pounds tenancy of Bishopscourt is terminable by one month's notice to quit at any time after the 15th November. This notice may be given by either party... No new arrangement is necessary. September 22 1886. Page 5. See attached Bishop file.

- To The Inspector Board for Protection of Aborigines - By direction of the Chairman of our Aboriginal Mission Committee I forward to you the accompanying Report of the Rev. J. H. ( Stähle ) Stahle respecting the Condah station. September 23 1886. Page 7.

- To The Reverend A. MacCully - As I understand that you are about to give up ministerial work in this Diocese, it is my disagreeable duty to remind you of your obligation to refund the 40 pounds advanced to you last year on the understanding that you would work for 5 years with us... September 24 1886. Page 10.

- To C. J. and T. Ham re Bishopscourt... while I cannot say now how long Mrs Pounds can remain at Bishopscourt, I think it unlikely she will be disturbed for at least four or five months. September 23 1886. Page 10. See attached Bishop file.

- To The Inspector Board for Protection of Aborigines - By direction of our Aboriginal Committee I forward to you herewith particulars of the rations needed at Condah station for three month, and a claim for 1 pound due to the Revd. J. H. Stähle for railway carriage of the body of an aborigine. September 24 1886. Page 15. See attached Aboriginal file.

- To The Reverend J. H. Stähle ( Johann Heinrich ) - Your application for rations and claim for 1 pound for railway carriage for the body of an aboriginal have been forwarded to the Board's inspector. The Dean thinks, and I agree, that it would be better not to send on the paper which accompanied your letter of the 22nd. The commendatory terms in which your work is mentioned in the "Visitors Book" amply refute any occasional disparaging remarks. But apart from that, when a man's conscience tells him that he is endeavouring to do his duty, he can afford to pass unnoticed things that might gall if he were NOT doing it. Thus, as to Captain Page having listened to complaints - What you say at the end of the paper shows that he acted well in the matter. It is much better that the aborigines should be allowed to say their say. I know you can always demonstrate its unreasonableness. If all their ill-humour were pent up, it would be much more troublesome in the end. September 24 1886. Page 16. ( I have had not had a reply to my enquiry about the sheep ). - Council of the Diocese - The attendance of members is requested at a special meeting to be held at the Diocesan Registry on Wednesday the 29th September at 4.15 p.m. to consider the recommendation of the Board of Electors that an income of 2000 pounds a year, including allowance for travelling expenses, be guaranteed to the new Bishop. Page 18. See attached Bishop file.

- To Alexander Maxwell - Mr Alexander Maxwell is requested to take notice that his services as Secretary and Collector for the Bishop of Melbourne Fund will not be required beyond the thirty first day of December and I reserve to myself the right of dispensing with his services summarily before that period if Mr Maxwell fails to observe the instructions in writing forwarded to him by me on September 24th. - To The Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of Ballarat - If you must be back in Melbourne on Friday the 10th December the Mansfield engagement must be given up. It is not possible for you to confirm at Bright on Thursday and consecrate Mansfield and return to Melbourne the day after... the journey might be accomplished as follows... September 29 1886. Pages 32 -33.

- To The Very Reverend Huseey Burgh Macartney D. D. Administrator of the Diocese of Melbourne during the vacancy of the See - We the undersigned members of the Church of England residing in Newport and its neighbourhood and also members of a Committee constituted for the purpose of erecting at Newport a Church of England place of worship in which Church of England services will be conducted by some person duly authorised to conduct services therein... to permit and suffer the erection thereon on a portion of such land a building to be used for public worship... building of wood suitable for public worship at a cost of not less than 300 pounds and capable of accommodating at least 250 persons. - To The Most Reverend Archbishop of Canterbury - I have the honor to inform your grace that the Council of this Diocese have determined, in accordance with the recommendation of the Bishoprick Election Boar, that are income of two thousand pounds a year, inclusive of allowance for travelling expenses, shall be forwarded to the next Bishop. The Council were led to this determination partly by a sense of the inadequacy of the income hitherto received by the occupants of the See, and partly by an expectation that the Endowment of the Bishopric would soon yield an ample revenue. If it be true, as reported in our daily papers, that the Revd. F. F. Goe of St George's, Bloomsbury has been selected to fill the vacant See, the Board will be glad if you will kindly communicate the above information to him. If the report be unfounded, they will feel obliged by your mentioning the increased amount to any clergyman to whom the Bishoprick may be offered. October 1 1886. Page 48. See attached Bishop file.

- To The Reverend R. Lomas The Grange Mentone Road .. Liverpool England - In reply to your letter of the 25th August, the Dean of Melbourne directs me to say that the Reverend F. F. Goe, Rector of St. Georges Bloomsbury having, as we believe, accepted the offer of the Bishopric of Melbourne, you should communicate with him with reference to your desire to come to this Diocese. - Board of Electors - Wednesday 6th October 4.15 To consider telegraphic instruction? that Mr Goe has accepted offer of the Bishoprick. October 4 1886. Page 57. See attached Bishop file.

- To W. F. Randle Care of Witerton 5 Spring St Sydney .. your letter was forwarded to the Rev. Stanley Low Incumbent of Christchurch and St Kilda with a note enquiring whether he could supply the information asked fortherein. I have received a note from Mr Low in which he states that there is no record of the baptism in his Church of which you desire a certificate .. There were no churches in St Kilda in the year 1857 except those under the charge of the Red McGregor? and the Revd Mr Low . In that year the present All Saints was not in existence but Church of England services were conducted by Mr Gregory in a building which was situated in High St Prahran... buildings in High St.. consolidated... called St Matthews of which Revd Langley is the Priest. I will send him your note... October 6 1886. Page 64.

- To The Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of Ballarat - I placed your letter of the 9th before the Dean, and he directs me to say that, while he is much obliged to consecrate the Church at Mansfield, he thinks that, having regard to the great trouble it would give his Lordship, and also to the possibly early arrival of the new Bishop, it will be best to leave the consecration to him.... - To The Reverend Doctor Vance Kew - By direction of the Dean I send you the accompanying extract from a letter received by him from the Bishop of Tasmania, which his Lordship has given him permission to publish. As every scrap of intelligence about our new Bishop is eagerly read, the Dean thinks you may like to insert this in the newspaper. October 14 1886. Page 82. See attached Bishop file.

- To The Reverend J. Caton ( John ) Moone Ponds - Your letter of the 31st August respecting the need of a building for Public Worship at the Temperance township Maribyrnong was again considered at a meeting of the Administrator of the Diocese in Council on Thursday last, and the consideration was postponed till next meeting on account of the large amount of business requiring attention. October 18 1886. Page 93.

- To The Reverend H. A. Betts ( Henry Alfred ) - Your application, made on behalf of the Church committee at Tarraville, for a loan of 200 pounds in aid of the erection of a parsonage, was submitted to the Administrator of the Diocese in Council on Thursday last, when the consideration of it was postponed till the next meeting. October 18 1886. Page 94. We have no plans of Parsonages which we can lend. We have nothing of the kind except plans of a wooden church.

- To The Hon. The Minister of Public Institution - I beg to forward to you herewith a copy of the memorial intended to be presented to you by the Clergy of the Church of England on Wednesday next. October 18 1886. Page 95.

- To The Reverend C. T. Perks ( Charles Thomas ) Richmond - The Dean wishes to know whether the attention of the Cathedral Building Committee has been directed to recent statements made by the Central Board of Health respecting the plans of the Cathedral and whether precautions are being taken to satisfy all legal requirements. - To J. Ward 6 Cross Street Prahran - The Rev. A. Toomath informs the Dean that he is willing to employ you in his District. On his giving you a nomination the Dean will license you, if you can pass the usual examination for a Readership... October 19 1886. Page 97. The Dean will be glad to see you at the meeting of Readers at his house tomorrow... He ? to you taking the services at Box Hill on next Sunday and Sunday week.

- To The Reverend W. A. Brooke ( Warren Auber ) Port Melbourne - The Dean wishes to let you know that he leaves for Sydney at the end of this week to attend the General Synod. He does not intend to return to Melbourne before the end of November... October 19 1886. Page 98.

- To Messrs Harwood and Pincott Geelong - Mr. W. A. Mountjoy, Hon. Sec. of All Saints Church Committee, Lorne, has written to the Registrar of the Diocese to say that general Ryall having purchased and paid for the old church site at that place, wishes the transfer to be made to you. In Mr a'Beckett's absence I (W. Morris) beg to furnish you with the .. particulars of the Certificate of Title of the land in question. October 20 1886. Page 102. I hold a Power of Attorney from Bishop Moorhouse and can sign for him.

- To The Reverend J. C. Love ( James Chalmers ) - Mr W. A. Mountjoy writes that General Ryall having paid for the old Church site at Lorne, which he purchased, wants his conveyance. The land is vested in the late Bishop and others. I suppose there is no reason why I, as the Bishop's attorney, should not sign the conveyance? Kindly reply. October 20 1886. Page 103.

- To The Reverend J. R. Walker ( John Rich ) ... The licence of Surrogate is not an admission into the Diocese as a "Minister" of the Church. Mr a'Beckett and I myself, and other layman have held licences as Surrogates... October 22 1886. Page 117.

- To E. Bryan Esquire ..Oxford - Your letter addressed to the "Right Reverend the Lord Bishop of Melbourne"... was opened at the Diocesan Registry there being at the present time no Bishop of Melbourne the See being vacant. The Bishop elect is the Revd F. F. Goe who is expected to leave England for Victoria a few weeks hence.... November 3 1886. Page 146. See attached Bishop file.

- To The Hon. W. E. Staubridge - the balance in hand available for the erection of the new Cathedral is rapidly falling

while as you will doubtless have observed the building is rising and it has therefore become necessary to ask you and some others who have promised liberal contributions to the fund .. to a further payment.. - To J. Christain Esquire Mount Macedon - Yourself to Church Corporation Trustees. I send herewith the transfer to the Church Corporation trustees of the piece of land given by you as a site for a Church at Mount Macedon ... November 12 1886. Page 165.

- To The Registrar of the Diocese of Sydney - More than a month ago I forwarded to the Primate by direction of Dean Macartney as administrator of the Diocese of Melbourne during the vacancy of the See his certificate of resignation of the See by Bishop Moorhouse and the election by the Board of Electors for the Diocese of the Revd. F. F. Goe as his successor in order that the primate might act with reference thereto as requested by such certificate. I take it for granted that such request has been complied with but I would nevertheless be glad to receive an official confirmation to this effect and also supply me with as to the steps that have been taken to give effect to the appointment. - To Messrs George and George Re Cathedral Hoarding - I shall feel obliged by you sending me a cheque for the amount due for the use of the above hoarding... November 17 1886. Page 174.

- To Mr Arnold Playle Hon. Sec. C. of E. Committee Corryong Upper Murray ... I enclose a copy of the regulations under which loans in aid of Churches and Parsonages are made when funds are available. At present our loan fund is exhausted. P.S. If you will furnish me with particulars of the land on which the Church is to be erected, and of the title on which it is being held, I will advise you as to the method by which it can be transferred to the "Church of England Trusts Corporation for the Diocese of Melbourne"in accordance with the provisions of the Acts of the Church Assembly. November 17 1886. Page 176.

- To The Reverend C. J. Godby ( Charles John ) ... next Sunday the last after Trinity, is the day appointed by the Church Assembly for collections for the Bishop of Melbourne's Fund. We are most anxious for a large sum of contributions in order that our new Bishop may not have to face a deficit on arrival. I think your people are prepared to render substantial help... - To The Editor of the Age - I shall be obliged if you will give place for the accompanying paragraph or something like it in the "news of the day" on Saturday. The collections will be advertised in the usual way on Friday and Saturday... Next Sunday, in accordance with the laws of the Church of England collections will be made in all places of worship connected with that Church within the Diocese of Melbourne, on behalf of "the Bishop of Melbourne Fund". This fund is the Home Mission Fund of the Church of England and the Church is dependant on it for its maintenance and extension in the poor and newly-settled parts of the country. Students are also assisted with it to pass through their training for the Ministry. The Administrator of the Diocese, the Venerable Dean of Melbourne, has made a warm appeal to the current members of the Church of England to contribute liberally on this occasion, when, as he forcibly reminds his readers, the stirring voice of the late Bishop will not as in former years stimulate the unready?. It is to be hoped that there will be a liberal response to this appeal, and that the Church of England will shew its Clergy does not depend on the leadership, however capable, of one man. - To The Reverend J. H. Stahle Church Mission Station Condor - The telegram about the wool infringes the arrangement made between certain members of the Aboriginal Board and the Dean and myself. Captain Page ought not to addressed you on the subject nor interfered with you in the sale of the wool and the disposal of the proceeds for the benefit of the aborigines. I have seen him and a member of the Board about the matter, in the Dean's absence, and I shall do nothing further till the Board writes to us on the subject. If any communication be made to you, be so good as to send it to the Chairman of the Mission Committee. November 18 1886. Page 186. See attached Aboriginal file.

- To R. Aitkins Esquire - Would you kindly let me know what has been done by the Primate about the "confirmation" of the election of our Bishop? Owing perhaps to the absence of our Dean, who is still with the Bishop of Goulburn, we are ignorant here of everything since we sent the official documents to the Primate on the 7th October. - To Mr Pounds Esquire Bishopscourt East Melbourne - If you will be so good as to keep the lawn at Bishopscourt well watered, we shall be prepared to pay the amount charged for the supply of water. - To The Reverend J. H. Stahle - I have forwarded Mr Newell's account to Captain Page. I think it will be better for the aborigines to go on with the walling. They will be paid for what they do, and Captain Page will fetch the amount when he visits next month. At the latter end of September it was announced by cablegram that the Rev. Goe had accepted the Bishopric and this information having been confirmed by private cablegram received by Bishop Perry... - To the Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of Ballarat - The Dean returned home today from N.S.W. and found your kind letter of the 24th instant. He is much wearied with his journey and has to attend a public meeting tonight, so uses my pen to thank your Lordship without further delay for kindly consenting to ordain the Melbourne candidates on the 19th December, and so considerately offering to provide for their hospitable entertainment in Ballarat. Grantham Hon Sec St Thomas Essendon.. - I beg to inform you that the Administrator of the Diocese with the advice of the Council therein has duly constituted the Parish Of St Thomas Essendon, and assigned to it the area of land contained within the boundary line specified on the other side.. - To The Secretary The Church Army 128 Edgware Road London - In reply to your letter on the 28th September last, the Very Reverend the Administrator of the Diocese of Melbourne directs me to suggest that you communicate with our Bishop-elect the Revd. - To The Reverend G. F. South ( George Frederic ) .. I went to the Lands Office and saw the Secretary of Lands for I felt sure you were labouring under a mistake. An exchange such as you desire to obtain would be an evasion of the law which does not now permit State Aid to religion in any form or shape. You may say that an exchange of land differs from a grant... the fact is no such exchanges are made... December 15 1886. Page 300.

Wright ( Thomas James ) - The Dean will be glad to know whether you are supplied with the .. books in which to keep records of the baptisms you perform and the marriages you celebrate. He understands that through some misunderstanding you do not keep such records (of baptisms) at Tatura and he is anxious they shall be duly kept in your present charge. December 15 1886. Page 301.

- To The Reverend A. R. Stackhouse ( Arthur Rashleigh ) .. the managing directors of Lathamstowe do make grants to clergymen to help them get holidays. These grants vary from 8 to 5 pounds. - To Captain Page Temple Court - Mr Stahle is very much troubled by the accounts which have appeared in the newspapers of what took place at the recent meeting of your Board at which I had the honor of being present... I shall be much obliged if you will send me a few lines to that effect... December 22 1886. Page 331.

- To The Reverend C. R. Cooney B.A. Rectory .. Ireland ....the Bishoprick of Melbourne is now vacant and that our Bishop elect is the Revd. F. F. Goe Rector of St George's Bloomsbury, London , to where you should apply if you desire to come to Melbourne. In answer to your enquiries I may say that Ministerial charges vary extremely in population and extent... The C. of E. Grammar Schools of Melbourne and Geelong sometimes have Clergymen on their staff, but I do not think there is any opening.. It is not the custom to promise employment ... The only way for a clergyman to obtain a position in the Diocese is by taking a curacy.... December 23 1886. Page 335 - 336.

- To The Secretary Aboriginal Board - Messrs Giles and Dunn wish to open a store in the fattening paddock at the Condah Station while the draining operations are going on.. It is said that nothing intoxicating will be sold in the store... December 31 1886. Page 374.

- To Captain Page - Has any decision .. as to the amount the Aborigines at Condah are to get for working at the stone wall? They are much discouraged by the delay. January 7 1887. Page 398.

- To The Secretary Board for the Protection of Aborigines - Your letter.. was placed by him before the Church of England Mission Committee at their ordinary monthly meeting held yesterday and I have now the honour to reply on behalf of the Committee... most anxious to cooperate ..in the common object of benefiting the aborigines.. regret that our views ...as regards to Condah Station at least are not consistent with those of the Board. We are of the opinion that it is most desirable that the income derived from the sale of stock and wool to be received by the Missionary in charge of the station and expended by him for the benefit of the aborigines whereas the Board insist upon the income being paid over to them and passed into their general account... the 22nd Report of the Board recently published did not disclose the fact the income of the Ramahyuck Station is at the disposal of the Missionary in charge... - To Mr Low... the strong remonstrances made to the Governor had the desired affects. I hope he shall have no more attempts to degrade the unfortunate aborigines... January 17 1887. page 436.

- To The Reverend S. Sandiford ( Samuel ) - The Dean has been very ill and has gone out of town for rest and change. The great heat of last week quite frustrated? him... I know of no man who can be sent to Yarragon .. for next Sunday.. January 18 1887. Page 438.

- To The Secretary Aboriginal Protection Board - I enclose a memorandum of the Redd. J. H. Sable in which he mentions the terms on which the aboriginals at Condah will construct the stone wall needed to be erected there... we have abstained from requesting Mr Stahle to forward the wool money pending the further consideration of the question solicited by the Chairman of the Committee.. - To The Reverend Canon Goodman ( Also to the Rural Dean's out of Melbourne ) - On behalf of the Administrator of the Diocese I forward to you the enclosed circular and beg that you will use every effort to liberate the Bishop of Melbourne's Fund from its serious difficulties. We shall be disgraced as a church if we have to pay less than 20 shillings in the Pound. January 21 1887. Page 453.

- To The Reverend C. T. Perks ( Charles Thomas ) - Mr Stellar has pointed out that under existing laws any workman injured on works where he is employed can obtain compensation equal to 3 years wages from his employers... January 26 1887. Page 471.

- To The Reverend E. A. Thomas ( Edward Alphonso ) - The Dean directs me to say that it has been reported to him that a person charged with a published document with embezzlement, has been appointed organist in St Andrews Church Clifton Hill. If that is so, the Dean trusts you will lose no time dispensing with his services at least until he has been cleared his character from such an imputation. It is also stated that an improper use is made of the school-room... trusts if anything of the kind is going on, you will discontinue it... January 28 1887. Page 476.

Caton ( John ) - With reference to our conversation... respecting the costume of the female portion of St Paul's choir, which I repeated to the Dean, he directs me to say that as the late Bishop did not interfere with the conduct of Divine service, he (the Dean), holding the office for only a short time during the vacancy of the See, thought it undesirable to take a different course... - To The Reverend W. Jennings ( William ) - In reply to your letter of yesterday the Dean directs me to say that he would gladly come to you, but does not feel equal to the exertion needed. He is expected by the P & O mail steamer due on the 10th April; the ceremony of his installation is fixed for the 14th and a public meeting to welcome him is to be held on the 18th of the same month. -  To The Archdeacon MacCullagh Wangaratta Case of Reverend H. J. Poole - In fixing the confirmations for Melbourne and suburbs in June and July, we followed exactly Bishop Moorhouse's lines. We thought it desirable to give the winter months to town, leaving the spring, summer and autumn to the country, with occasional return to Melbourne... If you will let me know precisely the confirmations you wish the Bishop to take in the Northern Archdeaconries and the "plan of the campaign", I will submit it to the Bishop as soon as I can after his arrival...
